The 2D and 3D Approaches to Drawing


There are two primary schools of thought when it comes to teaching and learning drawing. Discover them, their pros and cons, and which you should study, in the video clip below:

Though I separated the two drawings above into 'shape' and 'form' approaches, both drawings used both methods to some degree. The left one relied more on the shape approach, and the right one relied more on the form approach. Integrating both approaches results in a realistic drawing with convincing depth and dimension, and a strong resemblance to your subject:
